We came. We saw. We terrified people at a karaoke bar.
Here at Vida we tend to believe that often times, experiences are better than “things.” So this year, in lieu of holiday gifts, we hit the road on a gal’s trip to Palm Springs. We laughed, we cried (whatever, we’re girls ok), we shopped, we ate, downed some wine, and we soaked in the design-rich history of the fabulous little mid-century celebrity oasis in the desert.
It wouldn’t be fair if we kept it all to ourselves, so here are some of the highlights of our trip:
Sunny Dunes Antique Mall - This shop was an antique treasure trove. It’s literally huge and full of everything imaginable, including a ton of great midcentury home decor and housewares. Chantell got a great vintage tee for $12, Katy got a stack of 1960’s records for about $3 each, and Sam got a fab art print for $5.
King’s Highway - This casual retro cafe in the oh-so-hipster Ace Hotel is the perfect place to pop in for a daytime bite. The former Denny’s restaurant is decked out in kitschy mid-century decor reflective of the original space with a bohemian twist. Worth it for both the ambiance and the food!
Norma’s - Sticking to the midcentury theme, this ultra-chic “diner” at the Parker Palm Springs Hotel not only serves delicious food (including breakfast all day), it gives you an excuse to visit the 5-star iconic hotel that houses it. We pretty much died over the lobster mac and cheese. Make sure to stop at the adjacent lounge for a drink in the swinging papasan chairs after dinner.
High Bar - This swanky rooftop poolside bar stands seven stories high above Palm Springs, offering gorgeous city and mountains views. Located in the Kimpton Rowan Hotel, it offers colorful, modern decor, a great wine list, and a yummy menu of small plates. We stayed cozy by the firepits, sipped on Prosecco, and nibbled on ceviche.
Retro Room Lounge - Struck with the inclination to do a little karaoke, we stopped by this fabulous local gay bar in downtown Palm Springs. A fantastic crowd paired with a few cocktails and the willingness to completely embarrass ourselves made this a night that we will definitely never forget. We’d like to formally issue an apology to anyone who heard us sing that night.
The Dazey LA Desert House - About 10 minutes from downtown Palm Springs, this 2 bedroom midcentury rental home is a colorful desert dream. Meticulously decorated with whimsy and charm, each room oozes mid-century authenticity with a modern, luxurious twist. We loved our stay!
We can’t wait for our next trip to Palm Springs. Who’s coming with us?!
